How to Find the Right Life Coach for You

Share this article:

A life coach can be a powerful tool and ally in your journey toward a fulfilling, rewarding, and meaningful life. They encourage self-improvement, creating sustainable change, and building the future you desire and deserve.

Why Hire a Life Coach?

The role of a life coach falls somewhere in between that of a mentor, and that of a therapist. Unlike a mentor, a life coach won’t use experiences from their own life to guide you. Instead, they’re focused on you, your goals, and what you need to achieve them. And while therapists tend to delve into your past to help you heal in the present, life coaches look forward to the future, working with you to create an action-based plan to create sustained change and achieve your goals.

If you feel stuck in your current lifestyle, a life coach can help you escape that rut and bring hope for a better future. If you have big goals and plans for the future, a life coach can help you focus on what exactly it is that you want, and formulate a concrete, actionable plan to help you bring it to fruition. If you know you need a major change in your life or lifestyle but are frozen by fear at the prospect of changing, a life coach can guide you through the process, and see you through to the other, brighter side.

What to Look for When Hiring a Life Coach

Life coaches are human, too. This means they each have unique personalities, mannerisms, outlooks, beliefs, methods of coaching, and encouragement styles. This is something to keep in mind when thinking about how to find a life coach. Some may help clients by serving as a warm, motherly figure guiding you on your journey. Others may elicit results using more of a “tough love” method. Different things work for different clients, and when searching for your perfect match for a life coach, it’s important to consider what type of energy and personality you respond best to.

Coaching Specialties

Like therapists and medical professionals, life coaches have different specialties. Some help individuals get through a difficult time, with a focus on moving toward the future. Some are experts in identifying goals and helping clients to set them in a clear and concise way. Others excel at creating actionable plans that focus on achieving a certain goal or goals. Still, others focus on couples and relationships, examining their joint goals and joint future.

Additionally, life coaches may specialize with a specific population, maybe men, women, teenagers and young adults, single parents, older adults, competitive athletes, or couples, for example.

Coaching Style, Approach, and Methods

Life coaches all have the same objective: to help you identify and achieve your goals, to create the best possible future. However, there are many ways to do this, using a wide range of styles, approaches, and methods.

As touched upon above, some coaches find success using a tough-love style of coaching. This approach means helping a client set goals, and then holding them accountable to them no matter what, even when it seems difficult for the client. This type of coach believes that being firm and not accepting excuses is the way to help their client level up their life. And for many clients, this approach works.

Alternately, many life coaches allow the client to lead, gently helping them to identify their goals and any obstacles in the way. They’ll listen to a client’s fears and apprehensions and find ways to help them through these personal roadblocks. Rather than having a firm, inflexible schedule in place to achieve goals, they’ll allow the process to be more client-led, helping the client to reach milestones and make progress towards their goals at a speed and time that the client feels comfortable with.

There are also task-driven life coaches. These types of coaches are always goal-oriented and focused on implementing a plan consisting of several smaller goals, leading up to the main goal. This method can be done using a variety of coaching styles, but the focus always remains on actionable steps that will lead the client forward, and closer to the better life they are trying to build.

Cost of the Coach

Compared to therapy or counseling, life coaching tends to be less expensive. That said, there is no set hourly or per-session rate that is universal across all life coaches. There are also a few different ways life coaches can bill for their services.

Hourly life coaching packages charge, as expected, by the hour. This is a good format for clients who anticipate only needing a few sessions to work on a specific goal or plan to only meet with their life coach sporadically. Hourly rates can average from about $75 to $250 per hour. For clients who want a more frequent or more permanent life coaching experience, many coaches offer monthly fees. This usually includes a set number of one-on-one sessions per month, plus remote support between sessions. This can cost anywhere from about $500 to $1500 per month. There are also rates for longer-term life coaching arrangements, where costs can vary greatly, and may be collected quarterly or monthly.

Coach’s Experience Level

One very important thing to consider when choosing a life coach is the amount of experience a particular coach has. This is not only about their overall experience, but also how much experience they have coaching people like you, who are in a similar season of life and have similar goals and obstacles.

Be sure to do your research and find out what sort of experience and qualifications a life coach has before choosing them.

Ask for a Consultation With the Coach

There’s only so much you can learn about someone from a website or an online bio. Life coaching is such a personal undertaking that it’s essential to make sure that you and your life coach will work well together.

This is why you should always ask for a consultation with a coach you’re considering. This initial session will let you each get to know each other a bit better. You can learn about the life coach’s specialties, methods, and personality, and they can learn about your goals, your lifestyle, and anything that’s holding you back.
